The Details: How juwo can help you!
(Note: No warranties nor liability, express or implied).
|
Record your thoughts or someone's talk directly.
Typing is unnatural, and can be a pain. There are problems with voice recorder, writing, and typing. Do you feel, “Thoughts and ideas come to me at awkward times, unexpected places and not in neat order.
I really wish there was an easier way for me to capture them". You can speak into the microphone and attach voice notes to the list (juwo). Also attach text and links; can revisit and rearrange past comments.
I use it to record my ideas, study notes, business contact details etc. Particularly useful when you are in a long meeting or lecture and only want to replay the key parts later on.
Even if you prefer to type, juwo is useful because you are organizing and dealing with notes or blocks of text.
Have you ever had your mind wander off while listening, and suffer as a
result?
People with short attention spans (ADD/ADHD) will find it useful in class, training or business meetings. With juwo, you can record audio and create a
table of contents as you record so that later on, you
can simply skip to and replay the important parts and also what you missed.
This saves you time and you can understand better
because you can visually see the structure.
If you are a teacher, you can record as you are
speaking, and easily save it to the juwo server (or
your own) and students can later on, view and listen
to it.
Steps: In Create Mode, click on the microphone icon and click to create new blocks and and attach voice and text snippets to them.
Demo: I sat in the audience and juwo'ed speaker David Ring while he spoke, "I have cerebral palsy, what's your problem?" Download. |
Skip to the important parts of a video or
audio clip
Feel frustrated that an hour-long talk takes an hour to listen to? View a table of contents and even create it yourself. This lets you skip to the important parts. If you host or publish multimedia: this allows your viewers to peruse more Audio Visual content. Websites can start hosting larger audio-video files and they will now be (somewhat) searchable. Comprehend the content better. Allows you to repeat key parts. A personal productivity tool. Annotate video remotely with only play access
Steps: see here.
Demo: if the BBC (or ABC, CNN...) had juwo, then clicking on any AV clip would launch NP and show the table of contents. Note that the clip is playing on the BBC's servers. On the demo page, click the Snowstorm hits North East. Download |
More meaningful business meetings and discussions
Business meetings are not very effective. The fastest mind wins. One cannot ruminate, or research what a speaker said, before replying. Must block off time. With juwo, you can use voice in the same way that email is used today with text. A meeting agenda can be a juwo, each speaker in turn creates their commentary juwo, attaching their voice, documents and other snippets. A notification goes out (coming soon) informing the meeting participants that the juwo has been updated. These meetings can be remote, can be interspersed with other activities, and can be mobile - used by PDAs.
Steps: Attach snippets and save remote. You will need to specify server etc.
Demos: A generic juwo meeting - participant #1 Anil attaches his comments to his commentary Download. participant #2 Rita, is notified that Anil has attached his comments,
she does some research, attends other meetings, and then records her comments,
attaching her snippets to them.
You can overlay her commentary on top of Anil's commentary to get the context for her comments.Download |
Form a community
When you add snippets to a juwo owned by someone else,
you are creating a commentary juwo. This commentary is your property and contains only your snippets over the outline of the juwo. You can give people your commentary version of the juwo. In order to see the context, they can overlay it upon the original juwo. (see picture). People can view other commentaries just as in a newsgroup you follow a conversation thread. Share snippets of text, audio, video, links, labels and voice notes.
Steps: create a commentary and save remote or simply email it.
Demos: 1) Heather is an American Idol fan; she has enriched "Somewhere over the rainbow" and linked to it from her blog Download. She also wants to show her friends how well she can sing; her commentary juwo is her rendition of the song. 2) A website showing young fans Jaydah and Elijah, commenting on their favorite TV show - Planet Cook Download

Enrich video or audio without editing
Those who create Audio-Video can “squeeze more juice” from existing multimedia content. Add supporting material without editing. Longer clips. Partially searchable by search engines. Only play access needed.
Steps: Create the juwo. To insert new material e.g. clarifications, simply create your voice or other snippet and insert it between the blocks. Creating a new block and then attaching the new snippet to it is the easiest way.
Demos: 1) talk by Ravi Zacharias. Click the link "mp3+juwo" after downloading the mp3 audio from here (right click and choose Save Target or Link As). Download 2) lecture on Physiology of Pain - UMKC School of Dentistry. Download 3) Heather's blog Download. Shows how to freshen up old material without re-recording. Can be used with separately sold CDs or downloads. Table Of Contents. Can skip to the important parts. Peruse more AV. Comprehend the content better. Repeat difficult parts. Create your own jargon labels, “jargon” (meta information) that can be attached to content to tell us at a glance,
the gist of it. |
Healthcare. Potential use: quicker diagnosis of diseases in rural (under served) areas and better utilization of healthcare staff, doctors and nurses, in the developing world.
Steps: more on this, later...
Demos: in conjunction with juwo on Android mobiles. |
Create voice overs without (painful!) editing
Since channels at a block are played simultaneously, audio snippets can form a voice over video snippets.
Demo: demonstrates voice over separate from video, personalized, no editing of video, can be of photos, MLS links too. 1) the Buyer's realtor customizes the video at a seller's website of an MLS house for sale. He provides voiceovers. Download 2) Buyer's 'notebook' and feedback. house listings no longer a blur. A 'notebook' which becomes a productivity tool for buyer. Can use for other things.Download |
Organize files on your desktop and links on the internet
This is more effective than Internet Explorer's Add to Favorites, because
-you can have separate juwos
-voice notes
-text notes.
Demo: organizing recipes for an Indian dessert (Gulab Jamoons - cheese balls in sugar syrup) along various categories. Download |
Enrich your Blog
Unlike previously where the publisher had the power, the *consumer* can enrich pre-recorded material without edit access. In the demo, a fan attaches her rendition of stanzas of a song, to a point in the AV. For example, you can comment on a memorable quote by President Bush (love him or hate him!) 10 minutes into his speech.
Demo: Heather's blog Download. |
Viral distribution.
juwos distribute virally. you send a link to a juwo that you have saved remote on a server, or you simply send the juwo file to the recipient. When she opens and clicks the link, NP downloads and installs automatically. She can use NP for her own purposes - all the other things listed on this page! |
Prepare the Table of Contents of an audio or video while
listening to it, or even afterwards.
Steps: Several ways to create the table of contents in Create Mode: A) create the list of blocks and then click the listen button and ring the blocks to attach snippets while you listen. B) The juwo can also be created by clicking the listen button and creating new blocks which automatically attach the snippets. C) click the cue for a snippet to edit the timestamps. Also see.
Demo: BBC demo Download etc. demonstrates: 1) enables you to skip to the important parts. no editing – video is on the BBC's website 3) only access to video is a url 4) Table of Contents of the audio is easy to create. |
Create labels that tell the reader what content is at a block
Labels or cues can be attached to blocks. This tells the user at a glance, what the content is at the block. For example, can mean 'key' or important. The labels can be customized to the user’s preference, or to his jargon. for example, an auto mechanic discussing a wiring diagram uses different jargon from a 16 year old fan of Britney Spears.
Cues can also perform functions. There are possible enhancements with cues e.g. voice recognition.
Demo: most of the demos here have jargon labels. |
A boss can leave instructions for subordinates
Demo: a dentist going out of town leaves specific instructions with links to local documents - X-Rays, patient charts etc. Download |
juwos can link to other juwos
A juwo can link to other juwos by means of a remote block.
Steps:here.
Demo: click on the remote block in the juwo to open another juwo. (You may have to expand the blocks to see the remote block).Download |

Technical Requirements
- NP/juwo has been tested on Windows XP. It has a small footprint of less than 1 Mb. We are working to make it available on other platforms.
- NP works on Java 5 and Java 6.
- If you are on Windows XP, you will have to click the yellow bar that appears near the top of your browser, to enable ActiveX.
- NP controls only Windows Media Player (for now). So Video snippets can only be those that will play in Windows Media Player. We are working to make it available with other players.
- Firefox users:
1) in a command window, type java -version
Ensure you have at least Java 5 or later. You can download Java from here
2) then download and install NP from here 3) To open a different juwo, simply enter the url of the html file in the JWO|Open menu. For example, the American Idol demo is at http://juwo.com/nodepad/demos/song/americanidol/blog.htm

Problems?
| First-time launch of NP hangs |
close it out and try again! (happens sometimes). |
| 'Unknown File' and most problems! |
If after clicking the link to launch NP, you get a
message saying "unknown file", then your computer requires Java 1.5
or later and it could not be automatically installed.
- Download java free from here, and install
it.
- Press Shift-Click on your internet browser to refresh the web
page.
- If there are still problems, remove old instances of NP
- Open a command line window. (On Windows you would go to
Start, Run and then type command and press OK). Type javaws. The
Java Web Start Manager comes up. Select and remove all instances
of Nodepad.
- Go to your Home directory. (On Windows, this is C:\Documents
and Settings. Then click on the folder with your user name). If
you customized NP, the settings are stored in two configuration
files. Make a copy of, and then delete nodepad_config.xml and
nodepad_ui.properties. Your settings may have to be input when
NP launches, in the Tools, Options menu.
